Commemorating its 70 years of Bilateral Alliance

AMCHAM brings together top representatives from the U.S. and Korea in unique joint session for the first time

Exploring Economic Priorities and Partnership Opportunities for a Stronger Future at AMCHAM Special Luncheon with Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin and U.S. Ambassador to ROK Philip Goldberg

Held in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Embassy in Seoul in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-ROK alliance this year, the event examined the importance of the U.S.-ROK alliance in the context of the broader geopolitical landscape, implications of the recent U.S.-ROK summit, as well as economic priorities and partnership opportunities between the two countries going forward.

In his welcoming remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-Korea alliance and that of AMCHAM’s founding, we are very privileged to have Foreign Minister Park Jin and Ambassador Philip Golberg with us. This is the first time that AMCHAM has hosted two of the most important people representing Korea and the United States in one special setting.”

He continued, “The economic ties between the U.S. and South Korea have reached unprecedented heights. I can honestly say that the relationship between the two countries is the best that I have witnessed.” He added, “Korea has emerged as the leading FDI investor in the U.S., contributing over USD $100 billion since 2021, and U.S. companies are continuing to make sizable investments here in Korea.”

In a keynote speech on the future of U.S.-ROK economic cooperation, Foreign Minister Park Jin said, “Congratulations on hosting this meeting as we wrap up a year that marked a remarkable development in the 70-year history of the ROK-U.S. alliance.” He added, “As can be seen in the fact that our leaders visited the U.S. four times in a single year, the relationship between the U.S. and ROK is closer and more dynamic than ever."

He went on, “The two countries are expanding their cooperation in the U.S.-ROK alliance as an economic and technological alliance in name and reality. In recent years, two-way investment has been increasing day by day, centering on high-tech industries, and the two governments are closely communicating and seeking solutions to pending bilateral issues based on trust and reciprocity based on the U.S.-ROK alliance.”

Ambassador Goldberg also commented on the U.S. government’s continued support for economic collaboration. “As allies and partners, the United States and Korea are invested in each other. Korea-U.S. business partnerships are driving growth and innovation that benefit not only our own people, but the broader global economy.”

Following Minister Park Jin and Ambassador Goldberg’s keynote speech, the event featured a Fireside Chat moderated by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim and CNBC Correspondent Chery Kang. During this conversation, the guests explored the key achievements shared between the U.S. and Korea and their insights on obstacles that the two countries may face in the future; the role that the U.S.-ROK alliance can play in safeguarding sustainable economic growth; the importance of the U.S.-Korea-Japan trilateral partnership in the region as well as new avenues for collaboration between the countries; hopes for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

The conversation extended to AMCHAM’s recent Doorknock visit to Washington DC, highlighting Korea's role as the leading FDI investor in the U.S. Strategies for sustaining these investments and strengthening economic ties were explored. Additionally, the discussion covered pathways for achieving sustainable economic growth, including initiatives related to nuclear power, green hydrogen, and renewable energy sources, aligned with net-zero emissions targets.

주한미국상공회의소, 한미동맹 70주년 맞아 

박진 외교부 장관, 필립 골드버그 美 대사 초청 특별 좌담회 통해 한미동맹 강화 전략 탐색  

암참 역사상 최초로 한·미 외교 정상을 한 자리에, 경제 협력 우선순위 등 한미동맹 핵심 요소 및 양국 동반자 관계 증진 방안 모색  

2023년 11월 28일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오후 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 박진 외교부 장관과 필립 골드버그 주한미국대사를 초청하여 특별 좌담회를 개최했다.   

한미동맹 70주년을 맞아 주한미국대사관, 외교부와 공동으로 개최한 이번 특별 좌담회를 통해 암참은, 급변하는 지정학·지경학적 환경 속에서 안보를 축으로 하는 한미동맹의 주요 측면과 그 중요성, 한·미 정상회담의 시사점 등을 두루 탐색하는 시간을 가졌다.   

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 환영사를 통해, “한미동맹과 더불어 암참 창립 70주년 맞는 뜻깊은 해에 박진 장관님과 필립 골드버그 대사님을 모시고 이번 좌담회를 개최하게 된 것을 매우 영광으로 생각한다. 특별히 한·미 양국 외교를 대표하는 두 분을 한 무대에 모시게 된 것은 암참 역사상 처음.”이라고 소감을 밝혔다.  

그는 또한, “한·미 양국의 경제 협력 관계는 그 어느 때 보다 다양한 분야를 아우르고 깊어지며 전례 없는 수준에 도달했다.” 라고 말하며, “한국은 2021년부터 1,000억 달러 이상을 투자하며 미국의 주요 FDI 투자국으로 부상했고, 미국 기업들도 한국에 상당한 투자를 이어오고 있다.” 라고 덧붙였다.  

이어 박진 외교부 장관은 한·미 경제 협력의 현재와 미래를 주제로 하는 기조 연설을 통해, “70주년을 맞아 한미동맹의 비약적인 발전을 이룬 한 해가 마무리되는 시점에 이번 좌담회가 개최된 것을 축하한다.”고 말했다. 그는 이어, “한 해에만 우리 정상이 4회나 방미한 것에서 볼 수 있듯 한미관계는 그 어느 때보다 가깝고 역동적.” 이라고 덧붙였다.  

그는 또한, “한·미 양국은 명실상부한 경제, 기술동맹으로서 한미동맹 협력의 외연은 확장 중.” 이라고 말하며, “최근 첨단산업을 중심으로 양방향 투자가 나날이 증가하고 있으며, 양국 정부가 한미동맹을 토대로 신뢰와 호혜성에 입각하여 양국간 현안에 대해 긴밀히 소통하며 해결방안을 모색 중이다.” 라고 말했다.  

필립 골드버그 주한미국대사는 또한 양국의 경제 협력에 대한 미국 정부의 지속적인 지원을 언급하며, “동맹국이자 파트너로서 한·미 양국은 서로에게 투자를 이어가고 있다.” 고 말했다. 그는 또한, “한·미 양국의 파트너십은 각 국의 자국민, 나아가 세계 경제에 이익이 되는 성장과 혁신을 견인하고 있다.”고 덧붙였다.  

기조연설 이후에는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와 강채리 CNBC 특파원이 공동 좌장을 맡아 박진 장관과 골드버그 대사와의 본격적인 좌담회를 진행했다. 이 자리에서는 한미동맹 70주년을 맞아 한미동맹이 달성한 주요 성과와 향후 전망, 지속가능한 경제 성장을 위한 한미동맹의 역할, 한·미·일 3국 협력의 필요성과 새로운 협력 방안, 인도·태평양 경제프레임워크(IPEF)의 중요성과 양국의 경제에 미칠 잠재적 영향 등에 대한 논의를 이어갔다.  

또한 최근 암참의 워싱턴 도어녹 방문을 돌아보고, 강력한 대미(對美) 투자 파트너로서 대한민국의 역할을 강조하며 향후 지속적 투자와 경제 파트너십 강화 방안 등에 대한 대화를 나누었다. 더불어 넷제로 실현이라는 목표를 위해 원자력, 그린수소, 재생에너지 등 지속가능한 경제성장을 위한 논의가 이루어졌다.
