U.S. firms in Korea pay attention to impact of AI on personnel affairs
By Park Jae-hyuk, The
Korea Times - Members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) on
Friday explored how artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies
will affect their human resources policies, as OpenAI's ChatGPT continues to
attract global attention.
Inviting Chung-Ang
University research professor in computer science and engineering Kim Sang-yun
as the keynote speaker for the 2023 AMCHAM HR Workshop, the business lobby
group representing over 800 members learned about changes and new opportunities
in personnel affairs in this era of digital singularity.
"According to
multiple surveys, marketing is the field that is likely to be replaced most
rapidly by AI like ChatGPT, because the technology has encroached on fields
that need creativity," he said. "Each employee will have fewer fields
of expertise, so they will be asked to develop other capabilities and companies
will need to redesign roles and responsibilities of their employees."
Kim added that AI
and data will be used in a wider range of personnel matters, including
employment, performance management and allocation of work.
The professor,
however, emphasized the importance of using quality data, mentioning the fact
that Amazon's AI-based employment program showed a preference for white male
applicants, as the U.S. tech firm had previously hired this way.
During the event,
Ministry of Employment and Labor Director General of Labor-Management
Cooperation Policy Lee Chang-gil also delivered congratulatory remarks,
promoting the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's efforts to reform the country's
labor market.
"The government
will continue to help foreign-invested companies understand and adapt to
Korea's changing employment and labor policies and environment, so that they
invest more in Korea," he said.
AMCHAM Chairman
James Kim said in his opening remarks that employee well-being is at the core
of building a stronger and more sustainable workforce.
"As we continue
to navigate our way through the post-pandemic era with a workforce that is more
diverse than ever before, we now have to prioritize implementing long-term
strategies to care for all employees," he added.
Their speeches were
followed by presentations on various topics related to human resources
management. The event also featured a panel discussion that delved into a
variety of themes, such as cultivating a strong and thriving workforce, new
human resources legislation and expanding global workforce operations.
