AMCHAM Navigates the Path ahead for the Next Frontier of K-Healthcare in the Digital Era

- 14th AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2023 -

​Examining the policy landscape of the U.S. and Korean healthcare industries, and ways to strengthen mutual cooperation​

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “The Healthcare Innovation Seminar is one of AMCHAM’s biggest signature events. Marking its 14th anniversary this year, this seminar has served as a valuable forum for participants from both public and private sectors to collaborate in enhancing the regulatory landscape of the U.S. and Korean healthcare industries and strengthening cooperation of the two countries.” He added, “The healthcare industry has spent the past few years coping with the sudden and vast disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now stakeholders from all sides, including government and business, need to band together and strategize a way forward in the next frontier of K-healthcare.”

Deputy Minister for Planning and Coordination of Ministry of Health and Welfare Kim Hyejin said, “Officially designated as a global hub for human resources in the bio sector by the WHO, Korea is embracing its role as a responsible member of the international community by actively sharing state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical production capabilities and technology with developing nations.” “In the upcoming year, the Ministry of Health and Welfare plans to launch the ‘Boston-Korea Project,’ a collaborative initiative that will develop innovative technologies and train key human resources through joint research by excellent research institutes from both Korea and the United States. Additionally, the ‘Korean ARPA-H Promotion Group,’ inspired by the U.S. ARPA-H, will be introduced to address formidable challenges, including pandemics and undiagnosed diseases, that require substantial resources and expertise,” she continued. “We look forward to continued support for the successful collaboration of these initiatives between the two countries.”

The Hon. Philip Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, also delivered congratulatory remarks. “The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for investment in digital healthcare capabilities,” he said. “As Korea and the U.S. continue to develop digital health solutions, I have no doubt that U.S. firms can leverage their capabilities in software and data solutions to work together to bring more digital health solutions to the world.” He added, “Thanks to our two presidents’ leadership, U.S.-Korea cooperation has deepened and strengthened in critical industries, such as semiconductors and EVs. I believe it’s time for healthcare to be a bigger part of the U.S.-Korea alliance.”

The first session began with a plenary keynote presentation on Government Initiative in Promoting Korea’s Bio-health Industry” led by Jung Eun-young, Director General of Bureau of Health Industry Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

In the following industry presentation, Oh Jinyong, North Asia Area Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, said, “At Johnson & Johnson MedTech, we understand that innovation thrives on collaboration. By harnessing the collective expertise of multiple stakeholders, we can drive advancements in healthcare that truly respond to the current and future needs of patients. We are excited to continue our engagement with Korea’s vibrant healthcare ecosystem as we recognize its potential to contribute valuable solutions for enhanced patient care worldwide.”

Managing Director of MSD Korea Albert Kim said, “Global pharmaceutical companies that have established a presence in Korea contribute to the development of the bio-health industry ecosystem by collaborating with local companies across a wide array of areas, ranging from R&D to consignment manufacturing.” He emphasized, “Backing for policies supporting the role of global companies as facilitators for the overseas expansion of Korean enterprises will lead to increased collaboration and investment.”

Medical Advisor at Moderna Korea Matthew S. Kim presented on the topic “The Importance of Pandemic Preparedness (100 Day Mission) and Moderna’s Collaborations with Korea.” Introducing Moderna's mRNA platform technology that can quickly respond to new infectious diseases, he explained, “Moderna is developing various cooperation around the world, including Korea, to expand the impact of mRNA drugs on public health.”

In the following Fireside Chat led by Professor Lee Jie-oh of the Department of Life Science & Institute of Membrane Proteins at POSTECH, panelists Kim Dongwon, Senior Director of Government Affairs at Moderna Korea and Kenny Im, General Manager at Baxter Korea, joined the other presenters to discuss the topic “Government Policy and the Role of Global Companies in Fostering the Healthcare Industry.”

In the second session, Chris Fitzpatrick, Director of Digital Product Portfolio Marketing - Asia at Intuitive Surgical, covered the topic “The Future of Patient Care: Digitally Informed and Technology-enabled.” “Intuitive has continued to advance for a better future of treatment through Da Vinci robotic surgery over the past 28 years,” he said, emphasizing the importance of government-medical-industry collaboration for digital innovation, the strengthening of digital application and the Intuitive ecosystem for improving patient health through more efficient and enhanced treatment.

Vice President of Corporate Affairs Kidney Care at Baxter International Andrew M. Whitman delved into the topic “Global Trend of Digital Health Adoption to Enhance Patient Centric Home Healthcare.” “Digital monitoring is a crucial tool to enhance the efficiency of medical treatment and elevate the quality of patient-centered care,” he said. “Especially, the implementation of digital monitoring for enabling home care can contribute to lowering government expenditures.” During his presentation, he introduced Baxter's digital patient management platform, Sharesource, designed for overseeing patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, and MyPD, which will be released in the future.

Co-Founder & CEO of Promedius Bae Hyun-Jin spoke on the topic “New Possibilities of Medical Imaging AI.” "The accuracy and efficiency of diagnosis emphasized by many medical artificial intelligence products are of course important, but now it is time to challenge a completely new area beyond the limits of existing medical practice," he said, introducing PROS CXR: OSTEO, the world's first AI solution that automatically screens the risk of osteoporosis using chest X-rays.

In the final session of the event, Parter at Yulchon LLC Chae Joo-yup led a panel discussion on the topic “The Future of the Health Industry: Transition to Digital Healthcare” featuring the previous speakers in the session as well as Kam Hye-jin, Director of Research at DoBrain, Yoon Young-bum, Senior Deputy Director of the Bio-Convergence Industry Division at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Yim Yeong-yi, Director of the Department of Healthcare Service Innovation at the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, and Jeong In-cheol, Associate Professor at Hallym University and Adjunct Associate Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Marking its 14th anniversary this year, the Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2023 is one of AMCHAM’s biggest annual events. The event has invited experts and key stakeholders in the public and private sectors to examine the policy landscape of the U.S. and Korean healthcare industries and ways to strengthening mutual cooperation. This year, AMCHAM partnered with Johnson & Johnson MedTech, MSD, Moderna, Pfizer, Promedius, Baxter, and Intuitive Surgical.

주한미국상공회의소, 디지털 시대를 맞아 K-헬스케어의 새로운 지평 탐색 

- 제14회 암참 보건의료혁신세미나 2023 성료 –  

한·미 양국 보건산업 정책과 협력 방안 모색  

올해 ‘보건의료혁신세미나’는 의료산업 성장·촉진을 위한 한국 정부의 바이오헬스 분야 정책 방향과 공공 건강 증진 및 사회 기여를 위한 글로벌 기업의 역할과 이니셔티브를 집중 탐색하고, 디지털 헬스케어 시대를 맞아 기술·정책·혁신의 조화와 정부·의료계·산업계 간 협업을 모색하고 그 발전 방안을 강구하기 위해 마련되었다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 전하며 세미나의 시작을 알렸다. 그는 “보건혁신세미나는 암참의 최대 규모 시그니처 행사 중 하나.”라며, “올해로 14회째를 맞는 본 세미나는 한·미 보건의료 산업의 규제 환경 개선과 양국의 민·관 협력 강화를 위한 소통의 장을 마련하는 창구 역할을 톡톡히 해오고 있다.”고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어, “보건의료 산업은 지난 몇 년간 코로나-19 팬데믹으로 인한 갑작스럽고 거대한 변화에 대처해 왔다.”고 말하며, “이제는 정부와 기업을 포함한 여러 이해관계자들이 힘을 모아 한 단계 도약한 K-헬스케어 위한 전략을 짜야 할 때.” 라고 덧붙였다.    

국회 보건복지위원회 김미애 위원은, “보건의료 분야의 현안 공유와 이해관계자 간 협력 방안에 대한 논의를 통해, 우리가 나아가야 할 방향을 설정하는 것은 물론 보건의료를 넘어 한·미 간 동맹 강화로 이어지기를 바라는 마음이다.” 라고 말하며, “지금껏 그래왔듯 앞으로도 긴밀한 관계를 유지하여 다각적인 측면에서 협력관계를 돈독히 이어갈 수 있기를 희망한다”. 고 덧붙였다.  

보건복지부 김혜진 기획조정실장은 또한 이어진 축사를 통해, “한국은 WHO에서 공식 지정한 글로벌 바이오 인력양성 허브로서, 세계적 수준의 바이오 의약품 생산역량과 기술을 개발도상국과 적극 공유하는 등 국제사회의 책임 있는 일원으로의 역할을 다하고 있다.”고 말했다.  그는 이어, “보건복지부는 2024년에 ‘Boston-Korea 프로젝트’를 출범, 한·미 양국의 우수한 연구기관이 공동연구를 통해 혁신 기술을 개발하고 핵심 인력을 양성할 예정이다. 아울러, 팬데믹, 미정복 질환 등 고비용 고난도의 도전적 과제를 지원하기 위해 미국의 ARPA-H를 벤치마킹한 ‘한국형 ARPA-H 추진단’도 발족할 예정.”이라고 밝히며, “양국간 협력사업이 성공적으로 추진될 수 있도록 많은 관심을 부탁드린다.”고 당부했다.  

또한 필립 골드버그 주한미국대사도 축사를 전하며, 그는 “코로나-19 팬데믹으로 인해 우리는 디지털 헬스케어에 대한 투자와 필요성을 절감하게 되었다.” 고 말하며, “한·미 양국이 디지털 헬스케어 솔루션을 지속적으로 개발하고 있는 만큼, 미국 기업들은 소프트웨어 및 데이터 솔루션 분야에서 역량을 발휘해 전 세계에 더 많은 디지털 솔루션을 제공할 수 있을 것이라 확신한다."고 덧붙였다. 그는 또한, “한·미 양국 대통령의 리더십 하에 반도체 및 전기차와 같은 중요 산업에서의 양국의 협력은 더욱 깊어지고 강화되었다.”고 말하며, “이제 한미동맹의 큰 축을 이룰 다음 분야는 헬스케어가 될 것.” 이라고 이어 말했다.  

이어 정은영 보건복지부 보건산업정책국장은 기조연설을 통해 국내 보건산업 진흥을 위한 정부의 이니셔티브를 소개했다.  

이어진 산업계 발표시간을 통해 오진용 존슨앤드존슨메드테크 북아시아 총괄사장은 발표를 통해, “혁신은 협업을 통해 발전하기에 존슨앤드존슨은 헬스케어산업의 다양한 이해관계자의 전문 지식을 폭넓게 활용함으로써 의료 분야의 발전을 주도하고 환자 치료의 현재와 미래의 요구에 부응할 수 있다고 믿고 있다. 또한 한국의 역동적인 헬스케어 생태계의 잠재력을 통해 전세계 환자들을 위한 더 나은 치료방법을 찾고 혁신적인 솔루션을 통해 의료 생태계에 기여할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다.”고 언급했다.   

한국MSD 알버트김 대표는 산업계 발표를 통해 “한국에 진출한 글로벌제약기업은 연구개발부터 위탁제조생산까지 폭넓은 영역에서 국내기업들과 협력하며 바이오헬스 산업생태계를 발전시키고 있다.”며 다양한 사례를 제시했으며, “한국기업의 해외진출에 있어서 교두보 역할을 하는 글로벌기업을 인정하고 지원하는 정책이 뒷받침되면, 더 많은 협력과 투자가 이루어질 것.” 이라고 강조했다.  

이어 발표자로 나선 김상혁 모더나코리아 의학부 이사는 ‘차기 감염병 대유행 준비 전략 ‘100일 플랜’’을 주제로, 신종 감염병에 신속하게 대응할 수 있는 모더나의 mRNA 플랫폼 기술을 소개하며 “모더나는 mRNA 의약품의 공중보건에 미치는 영향력을 확대하기 위해 한국을 포함한 전세계적으로 다양한 협력을 전개하고 있다.”고 설명했다.    

이지오 포스텍 생명과학과 교수가 좌장을 맡은 대담 세션에서는 정은영 보건복지부 보건산업정책국장을 비롯하여 앞서 발표를 맡아 주었던 산업계 발표자들과 함께 김동원 모더나 코리아 대외협력 총괄과 임광혁 박스터 코리아 사장이 패널로 참석해 ‘의료산업 육성에 대한 정부 정책과 글로벌 기업의 역할’을 주제로 토론 시간을 가졌다.  

이어진 두번째 세션에서 인튜이티브서지컬 크리스 피츠패트릭 디지털제품 아시아 총괄은 ‘환자 중심 의료의 미래’를 주제로, “인튜이티브는 지난 28년 동안 다빈치 로봇수술을 통해 더 나은 치료의 미래를 위해 지속적으로 진보해왔다.”며, 보다 효율적이고 개선된 치료를 통한 환자의 건강 개선을 위한 Digital application, Intuitive eco-system의 강화 및 디지털 혁신을 위한 정부·의료계·산업계 간 협업과 파트너쉽의 중요성을 강조했다.  

박스터인터내셔널 글로벌 대외협력 총괄 앤드류 휘트만은 이어, “디지털 모니터링은 의료진의 치료 효율성을 높이고 환자 중심치료의 질을 향상시키는 중요한 도구이다. 특히 재택치료 활성화를 위한 디지털 모니터링의 도입은 정부 재정의 절감에 기여할 수 있다.”고 말하며, 복막투석 환자 관리를 위한 박스터의 디지털 환자 관리 플랫폼인 셰어소스(Sharesource) 및 앞으로 출시 예정인 마이피디(MyPD)를 소개하였다.  

프로메디우스 배현진 대표이사는 또한, ‘보조수단을 넘어, AI가 혁신하는 의료영상’을 주제로, “많은 의료 인공지능 제품들이 강조하는 진단의 정확성과 효율성도 물론 중요하지만, 이제는 기존 의료 행위의 한계를 뛰어넘어 완전히 새로운 영역에 도전해야 할 시점.” 이라며, 세계 최초로 흉부 X-Ray를 활용해 골다공증 위험을 자동 스크리닝하는 AI 솔루션인 PROS CXR: OSTEO를 소개하였다.  

포럼의 마지막 세션은 법무법인 율촌 채주엽 변호사가 좌장을 맡아 앞서 발표를 맡아 주었던 산업계 발표자를 포함하여 두브레인 감혜진 연구총괄이사, 산업통상자원부 바이오융합산업과 윤영범 서기관, 임영이 한국보건산업진흥원 의료서비스 혁신단장, 정인철 한림대학교 부교수/ 마우트 사이나이 아이칸 의과대학 겸임부교수와 함께 ‘보건산업의 미래: 디지털 헬스케어로의 전환’을 주제로 토론을 이어갔다.  

올해로 벌써 14회째를 맞는 암참의 ‘보건의료혁신세미나 (Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2023)’는 암참의 시그니처 연례 행사 중 하나로, 매년 보건의료 산업 민·관 분야별 전문가 및 주요 이해관계자를 초청해 한·미 양국의 보건산업 정책과 협력 방안을 모색하여 오고 있다. 올해 세미나에는 존슨앤드존슨메드테크, MSD, 모더나, 화이자, 프로메디우스, 박스터, 인튜이티브 써지컬이 파트너로 참여했다.
