AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim Receives Presidential Commendation on Taxpayer’s Day

March 4, 2024 - American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) Chairman & CEO James Kim is awarded the Presidential Commendation at the 58th Taxpayer's Day Ceremony this morning.

At the ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Chairman & CEO James Kim was recognized by the National Tax Service for his contributions to tax cooperation.

As Chairman and CEO of AMCHAM, James Kim has served as a bridge between foreign companies and Korean government agencies. He has organized numerous tax-related forums and seminars, facilitating the communication of industry opinions on tax reform and enhancing AMCHAM member companies' understanding of the Korean tax system. In addition, he was recognized for being instrumental in promoting Korea as a regional business hub within the Asia-Pacific region through the establishment of a stable domestic tax environment. He has made multilayered efforts to enable foreign-invested companies to compete and grow in a more favorable environment.

Furthermore, AMCHAM has emphasized the importance of policies such as the one-year extension of the Under Taxed Payment Rule (UTPR) and the expanded application of the flat tax rate for foreign residents who have lived in Korea for more than five years as key factors in promoting foreign investment and business activities in Korea. AMCHAM has also made significant contributions to raising awareness of the need for such tax reforms.

“I am honored to be invited to this prestigious event, and even more so to receive this award,” said Chairman & CEO James Kim. “I am also deeply grateful to the Korean government for recognizing the importance of attracting FDI, listening to the voices of the global business community, and always responding swiftly.” He continued, “AMCHAM deeply appreciates the outstanding job that NTS Commissioner Kim Changki is doing to promote a fair tax system for corporations and individuals in Korea. His proactive engagement and effective communication with the business community are a testament to the Commissioner’s important leadership.”

He added, “AMCHAM will continue to faithfully fulfill its role as a bridge between the global business communities and governments of the U.S. and Korea.”

암참 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사, 제58회 납세자의 날 세정협조자 유공 대통령 표창 수상  

2024년 3월 04일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김) 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사가 오늘 오전 ‘제58회 납세자의 날’ 기념식에서 대통령 표창을 받았다.  

기획재정부 주최로 서울 동대문 DDP에서 열린 이날 기념식에서 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 국세청으로부터 ‘세정협조자’ 유공을 인정받아 이번 대통령 표창을 수상했다.   

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 그간 외국계 기업과 한국 정부 관계부처간 연결고리로서 수 차례 조세 관련 간담회 및 관련 세미나를 개최하는 등 조세 개혁에 관한 산업계 의견 전달 및 국내 조세 제도에 대한 암참 회원사를 포함한 글로벌 재계의 이해도를 높이는데 기여해왔다. 또한, 안정적인 국내 세제 환경 구축을 통해 한국을 아·태지역 內 비즈니스 중심지로 부상시키고 외투 기업들이 보다 우호적인 환경에서 경쟁력을 키우고 성장할 수 있도록 다각도의 노력을 기울인 공적을 인정받아 이번 수상자로 선정되었다.  

암참은 한편 글로벌최저한세의 과세방식 중 하나인 소득산입보완규칙(UTPR, Under Taxed Payment Rule)의 1년 연장 (2024년도->2025년도부터의 도입) 및 5년 이상 국내 거주 외국인 대상 단일 세율 확대 적용 (5년->20년) 등의 정책이 국내 외국인 투자 및 비즈니스 활동 촉진에 있어 중요한 요소임을 강조하며, 해당 세제 개편 필요성에 대한 이해 형성에 크게 기여하였다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는, “의미 있는 자리에 초대받은 것 만으로도 감사한 일인데, 더욱이 수상까지 하게 되어 무척 영광스럽다.”고 말하며, “FDI 유치의 중요성을 인지하고 글로벌 비즈니스 커뮤니티의 목소리를 경청하며 항상 신속하게 대응해 주시는 한국 정부에 깊은 감사의 말씀을 전한다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 그는 또한, “암참은 국내 기업은 물론 개인들을 위한 공정한 조세 제도를 촉진하기 위한 김창기 국세청장의 노고와 헌신에도 진심으로 감사의 인사를 전하고 싶다.” 라고 말하며, “비즈니스 커뮤니티와의 효과적인 소통을 위한 적극적인 참여와 활동은 청장님의 탁월한 리더십의 방증.” 이라고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어, “앞으로도 암참은 글로벌 재계와 한·미 양국 정부의 연결고리로서의 역할에 충실히 임할 것.” 이라고 각오를 밝혔다.
