AMCHAM Strengthens U.S.-Korea Economic Partnership in Meeting with Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)

3, 2022 - The American Chamber of Commerce in
Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) had a special meeting with Senator Tammy
Duckworth (D-IL) on June 2, 2022, at the Grand Hyatt Seoul.
The
AMCHAM delegation included James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, Jeffrey
Jones, Chairman of the Partners for the Future Foundation, Jinyong Oh,
Area Managing Director, North Asia of Johnson & Johnson, Steve Park,
Public Policy Director, Korea & Japan at Meta, Dong C. Ha, Chief
Executive & President of Northrop Grumman, Young-Hoon Kim, Head of
Public Policy at AWS, Youngje Kim, President & CEO of GE Korea, Henry
An, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors & Senior Partner at Samil
PwC, and Matteo Curcio, Vice President – Asia Pacific at Delta Air
Lines. Also in attendance were National Assemblyman Lee Sang-min and
Chargé d'Affaires ad interim Christopher Del Corso from the U.S. Embassy
Seoul.
During
the meeting, AMCHAM and Senator Duckworth discussed business prospects
and challenges in Korea. Furthermore, the group explored economic partnership
opportunities in the context of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.
Senator
Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) said “South Korea is critically important not
just to the United States' economy, but to my home state of Illinois's,
specifically.” She continued, “As a hub of agriculture, manufacturing and
technology, my state is uniquely prepared for greater investment from and
increased exports to partners like South Korea. And we’re ready for more.
Senator Duckworth added, “It’s clear that when our nations strengthen our
mutual supply chains, we help insulate one another from economic shocks and
give each other an even greater competitive edge, so let's get the ball
rolling. Let’s take the next steps to invest in each other, in our partnership
and in our friendship.”

Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Given President Biden’s recent visit
and the new Korean Government under President Yoon Suk Yeol, it is indeed
a very exciting and crucial timing for the Senator to visit Korea as part of
her Indo-Pacific tour.” He continued, “I hope today’s discussion will yield
helpful insights into business opportunities and challenges facing the U.S.
enterprises operating in Korea, and how Korea could emerge as a regional
business hub by creating the best business environment in Asia.” He
added, “AMCHAM will continue to do its part in promoting the economic
partnerships between the U.S. and Korea.”
In his remarks, South Korean National Assemblyman Lee Sang-min
said, “First of all, I would like to express my deep gratitude to AMCHAM and
Chairman & CEO James Kim, who are working to promote economic relations,
cultural exchange and friendship between Korea and the U.S.” He continued, “I
know that Senator Duckworth is playing an important role in the interest of
promoting Korea-U.S. relations as well as joint prosperity in Asia,” he said.
“Through the last U.S.-Korea Presidential Summit, the two countries have made a
pledge to develop their security and military ties and become allies even in
economy and technology. The Korean National Assembly is ready to support them.”
He also added, “Personally, I would like to contribute to the promotion of
welfare for the disabled in both Korea and the U.S.”
U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth was elected
to the U.S. Senate in 2016 after representing Illinois’s Eighth Congressional
District in the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms. Senator Duckworth
serves on several influential committees that give her an important platform to
advocate for Illinois’s working families and entrepreneurs: the Armed Services
Committee; the Environment & Public Works Committee; the Commerce, Science,
& Transportation Committee; and the Small Business & Entrepreneurship
Committee.
This
is AMCHAM’s second meeting with Senator Duckworth after their first meeting in

2022년 6월 3일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 6월 2일 오후 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 태미 더크워스 (Tammy Duckworth, 민주당-일리노이) 美 상원의원과의 특별한 만남을 가졌다. 이번 간담회에는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사, 제프리 존스 암참 미래의동반자재단 이사장, 오진용 존슨앤드존슨메디컬㈜ 대표이사/북아시아지역 총괄 사장, 박대성 메타 대외정책 총괄 부사장, 하동진 노스롭그루먼코리아 사장, 김영훈 AWS 정책협력 실장, 김영제 GE코리아 사장, 안익흥 암참 이사회 의장 & 삼일회계법인 부대표, 마테오 쿠시오 델타항공 아시아 태평양 부사장 등이 암참 대표단으로 참석한 가운데, 더불어민주당 이상민 의원과 크리스토퍼 델 코르소 주한미국대사 대리 등도 함께 했다. 간담회를 통해 태미 더크워스 (Tammy Duckworth, 민주당-일리노이) 미 상원의원은 암참 대표단과 함께 한국 內 비즈니스 전망과 경영상의 애로 사항 등에 대해 이야기를 나누며, 인도·태평양 경제 프레임워크를 통한 경제 협력 증진 기회를 논의하였다. 태미 더크워스 (Tammy Duckworth, 민주당-일리노이) 미 상원의원은, “한국은 우리 경제뿐만 아니라 제가 속한 일리노이 주에도 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다.” 또한, “일리노이주는 농업, 제조업, 기술 분야의 중심지로서 한국과 같은 해외 파트너와의 수출입 및 투자 증대를 위한 완벽한 준비를 마쳤고, 이제 한걸음 더 나아가야 할 때.”라고 덧붙이며, “우리가 국가간 공급망을 강화하면, 경제 쇼크 등의 어려움을 이겨낼 수 있을 뿐 아니라 서로의 경쟁력을 더욱 높여주는 효과도 가질 수 있다” 라고 말했다. 더크워스 상원의원은 이어, “앞으로 더 많은 투자, 더 좋은 파트너십, 더 깊은 우정을 향해 함께 나아가기를 소망한다.”라고 힘주어 말했다. 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는, “최근 바이든 대통령의 방한과 윤석열 대통령의 새 정부 출범에 더하여, 더크워스 상원의원의 인도·태평양 순방 일정 중 시기적절한 만남을 갖게 된 것을 매우 고무적으로 생각한다.”고 말하며, “오늘 논의를 통해 한국에 진출한 미국 기업들이 직면하고 있는 비즈니스 기회와 애로 사항, 아울러 대한민국이 최고의 기업 환경을 조성하여 아시아 內 비즈니스 허브로 부상할 수 있는 방법에 대한 통찰을 나눌 수 있었기를 바란다”고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어, “암참은 앞으로도 다양한 프로그램을 통해 한·미 경제 협력 관계 증진을 위한 본연의 역할을 다 할 것” 이라고 밝혔다. 더불어민주당 이상민 의원은 또한, “먼저 한·미 경제관계, 인적교류 및 양국 우애 증진을 위해 힘쓰고 있는 암참과 제임스 김 회장에게 깊은 감사의 말씀을 전한다”며 소감을 밝혔다. 이어 그는, “더크워스 의원은 한·미 관계 증진 뿐 아니라 아시아 공동번영에 특별한 관심을 갖고 의정 활동을 하고 있음을 익히 알고 있다.”며, “지난 한·미 정상회담을 통해 양국은 가치동맹, 안보·군사동맹 나아가 경제기술동맹국으로까지 관계를 발전시키고자 다짐을 한 바 있고, 한국 국회는 이를 지원할 준비가 되어있다”고 말했다. 또한, “개인적으로 한·미 양국의 장애인 네트워크 및 후생 증진에도 힘을 보태고 싶다.”고도 덧붙였다. 태미 더크워스 (Tammy Duckworth, 민주당-일리노이) 미 상원의원은 일리노이 제8선거구 하원의원을 두 차례 지낸 후 2016년 상원의원에 당선되었다. 더크워스 상원의원은 현재 일리노이주 內 근로 가정과 기업가를 옹호하는 중요한 플랫폼 역할을 하는 여러 영향력 있는 위원회인 군사위원회, 환경공공사업위원회, 상업·과학교통위원회 및 중소기업위원회 의원으로 활발히 활동 중이다. 암참과 더크워스 상원의원과의 만남은 2021년에 이어 이번이 두 번째다.
